Project Engineer, New Product Development

Summary

The Project Engineer, New Product Development, supports the design and commercialization of reciprocating engine-driven natural gas generator packages for mission-critical data center and oil field applications while reporting to the New Product Development Manager. This role contributes across the full product lifecycle, from requirements definition and concept development through detailed design, validation, production release, and continuous improvement.

The engineer will integrate major package systems, including the engine, fuel system, radiator and ventilation, weather and acoustic enclosure, exhaust and silencer, selective catalytic reduction emissions equipment, switchgear, and controls. Success in this role requires sound mechanical judgment, disciplined documentation, and effective collaboration across engineering, manufacturing, suppliers, and project teams.

Principle Responsibilities and Duties

• Support new product development for natural gas reciprocating generator packages serving data centers and other critical infrastructure markets.
• Develop and evaluate system architectures, package layouts, and mechanical interfaces for fully integrated generator solutions.
• Perform engineering calculations and evaluations related to cooling, ventilation, fuel gas, exhaust, acoustics, enclosure design, structural interfaces, service access, and equipment integration.
• Apply design-for-manufacturability, design-for-assembly, and design-for-serviceability principles throughout development.
• Create and maintain general arrangements, P&IDs, equipment specifications, engineering calculations, fabrication documentation, and detailed bills of material.
• Evaluate technical tradeoffs involving performance, cost, schedule, manufacturability, reliability, scalability, and maintainability.
• Define product scope, component requirements, supplier assumptions, and design maturity to support estimating and commercial activities.
• Provide technical support during prototype fabrication, assembly, testing, commissioning, production release, and field deployment.
• Plan and facilitate design reviews, document decisions, track technical actions, and communicate project status and risk.
• Maintain released designs and bills of material to incorporate supplier changes, manufacturing improvements, field feedback, and lessons learned.
• Support product launch and transition to repeatable manufacturing with complete drawings, documentation, test requirements, and service information.

Qualifications

• Bachelor’s degree in Mechanical Engineering, Mechanical Engineering Technology, or a closely related discipline. An equivalent combination of technical education and directly relevant experience may be considered.
• Ten or more years of mechanical package design experience involving complex industrial equipment, packaged systems, power generation equipment, rotating equipment, or comparable products utilizing SolidWorks, CADWorx, AutoCAD, or comparable 2D and 3D design tools.
• Experience integrating mechanical equipment and managing interfaces across multiple package subsystems.
• Ability to interpret and produce engineering drawings, P&IDs, specifications, equipment data sheets, calculations, and bills of material.
• Working knowledge of mechanical system tradeoffs involving airflow, cooling, acoustics, exhaust, manufacturability, reliability, and serviceability.
• Experience coordinating technical work across engineering, manufacturing, suppliers, and other cross-functional stakeholders.
• Strong analytical, organizational, documentation, and professional communication skills.
• Ability to manage multiple priorities, exercise sound engineering judgment, and work effectively with limited supervision.

Preferred Qualifications

• Experience with reciprocating natural gas generator systems or packaged power generation equipment.
• Experience supporting large-scale data center, oil field, or other mission-critical power applications.
• Familiarity with selective catalytic reduction systems and emissions compliance for large-bore natural gas engines.
• Direct experience with Caterpillar, Waukesha, or comparable engine platforms.
• Experience transitioning products from development into repeatable manufacturing and field deployment.
• Experience with skid-mounted or modular equipment, fabrication practices, prototype builds, and product validation testing.
• Proficiency with SolidWorks, CADWorx, AutoCAD, or comparable 2D and 3D design tools.
• Experience developing fabrication drawings, general arrangements, P&IDs, detailed bills of material, and manufacturing documentation.
• Professional Engineer licensure or Engineer in Training certification.

Physical Requirements

• Fast-paced general office environment. Many tasks have high degrees of time sensitivity.
• Domestic and international travel is possible on occasion.
• May be exposed to confidential information.
• Occasionally required to work non-standard hours including evenings and weekends.
