Power Generation Technician

Summary

The Power Generation Technician is responsible for supporting the commissioning, operation, reliability, and performance of large natural gas reciprocating engine-driven power generation assets. This role provides hands-on technical expertise for generator packages such as Caterpillar CG260/3520, Waukesha 9394/16V275, and Jenbacher units, with involvement from factory testing through site commissioning and operational support.

The position includes participation in factory acceptance testing (FAT), pre-dispatch functional testing, and coordination with OEMs and EPC contractors to ensure equipment readiness prior to shipment and successful startup at site. The role also provides technical input on balance-of-plant (BOP) equipment, basic controls settings, and constructability considerations to support safe startup, high availability, and long-term reliability of plant equipment.

This role is based in Houston, Texas, with required travel to customer and project sites throughout the United States.

Principle Responsibilities and Duties

Factory Testing & Pre-Dispatch
• Support FAT, functional testing of generators/aux systems
• Assist OEM inspections, pre-dispatch commissioning
• Verify mechanical, electrical, controls readiness
• Help develop/close punch lists

Site Commissioning & Startup
• Support mechanical completion, pre-commissioning, startup
• Assist synchronization, performance, operational testing
• Perform system checks and validation
• Coordinate with OEMs, EPC, field teams to resolve issues

Reliability & Troubleshooting
• Troubleshoot mechanical, electrical, operational issues
• Analyze performance data, alarms, trends
• Recommend actions to improve reliability/performance
• Support RCFA for engines, controls, auxiliaries

BOP & Controls Support
• Support BOP systems: switchgear, transformers, SCR, fuel gas
• Assist with control settings and parameter adjustments

Design & Constructability
• Review layouts/designs for commissioning/maintenance
• Advise on access, clearances, spacing
• Support RAM, HAZOP, constructability reviews
• Identify operational/maintenance risks early

Qualifications

Required Qualifications

  • High school diploma or GED
  • 5+ years of hands-on experience supporting commissioning, maintenance, and troubleshooting of reciprocating engine-driven power generation equipment.
  • Strong mechanical and electrical troubleshooting and diagnostic skills
  • Demonstrated experience supporting generator set startup, commissioning, and maintenance planning activities.
  • Ability to read and interpret technical manuals, P&IDs, electrical drawings, and commissioning procedures.
  • Willingness to travel to project and customer sites across the United States

Preferred Qualifications

  • Experience with large gas engine platforms (CAT CG260/3520, Waukesha 9394/16V275, Jenbacher, or similar)
  • Experience supporting factory testing (FAT) and site commissioning of generator packages.
  • Familiarity with reliability and availability concepts for power generation equipment
  • Knowledge of emissions control systems (e.g., SCR) and associated auxiliary equipment.
  • Exposure to basic controls settings, tunable, and generator synchronization concepts
  • Experience supporting plant startups, outages, and operational troubleshooting events.

  • Ability to work independently in field environments and during critical startup events.
  • Effective communication with engineers, operations personnel, OEM technicians, and EPC contractors
  • Strong safety awareness and adherence to plant procedures and commissioning protocols

Physical Requirements

  • Combination of field, plant, factory, and occasional office environments
  • Travel to OEM facilities, fabrication shops, and customer project sites as required.
  • Support during commissioning, startup, testing, and troubleshooting activities.
