Paint Lead - Assembly -Finished Goods Paint - Night Shift

Department: Paint - Finished Goods II

Summary

The Paint Lead is responsible for directing and making operational decisions on the shift in alignment with the Paint Supervisor's guidance. This role requires a self-motivated, safety-driven individual with a highly organized approach to work. The Paint Lead must be flexible, adaptive, and skilled at prioritizing competing demands while managing multiple concurrent activities.

Serving as the primary backup and on-shift representative of the Paint Supervisor, the Paint Lead supports the day-to-day leadership of a team of 10–20 employees within the Paint Department. Key areas of responsibility include coordinating daily team activities, supporting employee development, approving timekeeping, monitoring productivity, and verifying quality outputs. The Paint Lead assigns resources to projects, communicates daily work expectations, and ensures the successful completion of all paint activities — including safety, craftsmanship, budget adherence, and quality standards.

Principle Responsibilities and Duties

Control

 

  • Maintain comprehensive knowledge of all areas within the Paint Department. 
  • Interpret and apply paint specifications, mixing procedures, application techniques, and other relevant technical documentation. 
  • Guide the paint team — based on input from Technical Specialists and Engineering — to efficiently execute projects per traveler requirements. 
  • Identify and communicate resource assignments to the Paint Supervisor to support project schedule attainment. 
  • Support the Paint Supervisor in preparing for and participating in regular and periodic Paint operations meetings. 
  • Serve as the primary backup for the Paint Supervisor, including the timely approval of team labor hours. 
  • Identify process improvement opportunities and document them with before-and-after photographic evidence. 
  • Collaborate with the Paint Supervisor, planning team, and management to develop contingency plans and revised paint target dates as necessary to meet customer commitments. 
  • Document surface preparation activities, Coating inspection reports and supporting photos.

 

Accountability

  • Lead the team's safety engagement efforts and maintain daily housekeeping to defined departmental standards.
  • Ensure team members adhere to all safety protocols and programs, including AWARE Cards, Take5, JSAs, JRAs, and safety topic discussions.
  • Direct and monitor painting activities in accordance with required procedures; capture deviations from planned hours and durations as needed.
  • Monitor GPS Traveler documentation and ensure all required signoffs are completed for assigned projects.
  • Coordinate with Material Control, Fabrication, and Assembly to prioritize material deliveries to the paint shop.
  • Ensure accuracy and integrity of billable hours during timecard approvals; verify that employees are billing to the correct project and resolve payroll exceptions in a timely manner.
  • Confirm activity start and end dates in the scheduling system in a timely manner.

Influence

  • Recommend training topics to HSE and/or Manufacturing Engineering Trade Meetings based on field observations and team feedback.
  • Provide input on team headcount requirements, resource capabilities, skill levels, and employee performance feedback.
  • Monitor team technical expertise levels; collaborate with the Paint Supervisor to ensure participation in applicable training programs.
  • Participate in direct-hire decisions for contract employees, as applicable.
  • Partner with Technical Specialists to develop realistic and efficient project plans.
  • Provide feedback to Supervisors, Manufacturing Engineers, and cross-functional team members regarding potential process improvements.
  • Collaborate with the Paint Supervisor, planning team, and management to develop contingency plans and revised target dates to meet customer expectations.

Qualifications

  • Minimum of 3-5 years' relevant industrial paint experience.
  • Leadership experience is preferred.
  • AMPP/NACE Certification a plus.
  • Must be able to identify surface preparation and coating systems to be applied.
  • The ability to read P&IDs is preferred but will offer training.
  • Proficient user of Microsoft Office software such as Excel, Word, Teams, and Outlook.
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills.
  • Must be dependable, highly motivated, self-directed, have attention to detail, and have great. Organizational skills with a minimum amount of daily direct supervision.

Physical Requirements

Industrial environment. This role will require a large amount of standing, bending, squatting, lifting, and walking on a constant basis. May be required to lift, carry, and move up to 50 lbs. Many tasks have high degrees of time sensitivity
