Instrumentation Engineer

Summary

The Instrumentation Engineer will be responsible for the design and development of instrumentation systems for existing and new projects across all product lines. This shall include the specification of industrial instrumentation, including the material to support installation. The engineer will develop instrumentation installation drawings, data sheets and specifications, in full compliance with recognized industry standards, safety standards, and various client specifications. This person will also assist in the technical development of assigned project P&IDs and provide support to the procurement team by generating instrument RFQs.

This work along with any other required data must be accomplished whilst complying with the company standards, the project proposal and the customers’ specifications or input.

Principle Responsibilities and Duties

  • Work alongside other departments (applications, compression, process, power generation, design/drafting, vessels and purchasing) in performing tasks required to support quoting, project execution, and procurement.
  • Work with the applications team during the bid phase to specify and estimate cost for specific instruments for bidding purposes.
  • After project award, liaison with the applications team to hand over all data used for estimating and understanding the background and particulars associated with the project.
  • Coordinate technical issues with customers (technical clarification, answer technical comments, deviation requests) and reach consensus.
  • Review SOW (Statement of Work) created for the project and, as necessary, review turn-in data created by the applications group including customer specification.
  • Attend Internal and Customer Kick Off meetings.
  • Understand the specifications and requirements of the assigned projects (may include answering questions for commissioning and start-up) and industry standard, classification society and regulatory requirements.
  • Provide Squad Check for project P&IDs and electrical drawings considering SOW and turn-in data.
  • Specify electrical instrumentation based on application of engineering judgement and electrical code and standards.
  • Support control designers in the development of wiring diagrams for instrumentation following customer specification and industry standards.
  • Release project Bill of Materials (BOMs)
  • Support project engineers on Change Order costing and scope as necessary.
  • Develop engineering specifications (drawings, data sheets, etc.) specific to the assigned project and validate them with the Project Engineer before incorporating them into the RFQs.
  • Independently evaluate all the bids received for Instrumentation packages from various suppliers, perform a technical bid evaluation process, involved in cost estimation, ensure selected vendors meet technical/engineering and delivery requirements as stipulated in the project specifications and give assessment to the buyer who will follow up in the tender evaluation, price negotiation and award process.
  • Conduct kick-off meetings with selected vendors as necessary to clarify issues and freeze the scope of the project, prepare and ensure the timely provision of accurate documents and specifications to the successful vendors to enable the latter to execute their work and deliverables.
  • Independently evaluate the instrumentation requirement for mechanically bought out packages.
  • Optimize instrument systems ensuring minimal cost and simplification in compliance with the required performance.
  • Contribute to the technical bid evaluation process, ensure selected vendors meet technical/engineering and delivery requirements as stipulated in the project specifications.
  • Independently develop solutions to technical/engineering and related problems by analyzing the issues/data, interpreting the analysis and evaluating various options/measures using experience, precedent and professional references.
  • Visit suppliers, check and test Instrumentation items to ensure that they function as per specifications. Where necessary work with the suppliers/contractors concerned to rectify the technical issues and make sure that they comply with the specifications and are ready on time.
  • Lead the efforts on building and populating of the in-house Instrumentation Database.
  • Continue to provide technical support to the project group.
  • Perform P&ID walk downs of final packages with the project engineer as needed to ensure the instrumentation is following the project requirements.

Qualifications

  • Bachelor of Science Degree in Electrical/Instrumentation Engineering.
  • Strong knowledge of various electrical components including Instrumentation and PLC hardware.
  • Strong working knowledge and application of Electrical Codes (UL, NEC, IEC), including sizing of conductors, protection device selection, installation methods, and other code applications.
  • Minimum of 5 years’ experience with instrumentation and controls.
  • Working experience on preparing engineering documents such as IOM, ITR & ITP list, Instrument datasheet, instrument layout and Loop drawings.
  • Good analytical, engineering problem solving skills.
  • Effective interpersonal and communication skills, both verbally and written.
  • Proficient with Microsoft Office application software.
  • Field commissioning and startup experience is a plus.
  • Knowledge in AutoCAD Electrical and CADWorx is a plus.

  • Fast‐paced general office environment. Many tasks have high degrees of time sensitivity.
  • Domestic and international travel is possible on occasion.
  • May be exposed to confidential information.
  • Occasionally required to work non‐standard hours including evenings and weekends.
