Installation Manager

Summary

The Installation Manager leads the safe planning, coordination, and execution of equipment installation for packaged power generation systems from site readiness and receipt through mechanical completion and turnover to commissioning. The role serves as the primary installation interface among Project Management, Engineering, Manufacturing, Quality, HSE, Logistics, contractors, OEM representatives, customers, and commissioning personnel. The position ensures equipment is received, preserved, set, aligned, interconnected, inspected, documented, and released in accordance with approved drawings, specifications, OEM requirements, project procedures, contract requirements, and schedule commitments.

Principle Responsibilities and Duties

  • Develop and maintain project-specific installation execution plans covering scope, system boundaries, work sequencing, responsibilities, labor, equipment, temporary facilities, risks, interfaces, inspection points, schedule requirements, and turnover criteria.
  • Review contracts, drawings, specifications, vendor documentation, quality plans, Inspection and Test Plans (ITPs), lifting requirements, preservation requirements, and customer obligations to establish the installation execution basis.
  • Participate in design, constructability, operability, risk, readiness, and lessons-learned reviews so installation requirements and field constraints are addressed early.
  • Establish controlled handoffs among Manufacturing, Logistics, contractors, Quality, commissioning personnel, customer teams, and Operations & Maintenance.
  • Lead site-readiness reviews for foundations, access, laydown areas, utilities, cranes, lifting paths, temporary facilities, environmental controls, permits, and required installation resources.
  • Coordinate delivery sequencing, unloading, receiving inspection, damage reporting, material identification, preservation, storage, and transfer of custody.
  • Confirm approved drawings, procedures, tooling, calibrated equipment, qualified personnel, OEM support, and inspection coverage are available before installation begins.
  • Coordinate resolution of shortages, shipping damage, preservation concerns, access restrictions, and site conditions that could affect safety, quality, warranty, cost, or schedule.
  • Lead installation activities for generator packages, engines, alternators, enclosures, cooling systems, exhaust and emissions equipment, fuel-gas systems, electrical equipment, controls, instrumentation, and applicable balance-of-plant interfaces.
  • Coordinate equipment setting, alignment, anchoring, bolting, grouting, piping connections, cable interfaces, grounding, auxiliary systems, access provisions, and installation checks within the company’s contractual scope.
  • Direct daily work coordination with project-assigned personnel, contractors, OEM representatives, specialty vendors, Quality, Engineering, HSE, and customer representatives.
  • Conduct field walkdowns to identify deficiencies, incomplete interfaces, damage, preservation concerns, access conflicts, and conditions that could affect mechanical completion or commissioning readiness.
  • Lead installation recovery planning for field conflicts, defects, late materials, resource constraints, and schedule impacts; assign action owners and escalate unresolved risks.
  • Ensure installation work follows approved drawings, specifications, procedures, OEM instructions, ITP requirements, and applicable codes and standards.
  • Coordinate inspection requests, hold and witness points, punch-list development, deficiency correction, redlines, as-built inputs, and completion documentation while maintaining Quality’s independent acceptance authority.
  • Verify system and subsystem installation records are complete, accurate, traceable, and retrievable before recommending mechanical-completion or turnover release.
  • Coordinate phased turnover to commissioning, including system boundaries, open-item status, preservation transfer, required records, outstanding risks, and approved punch-list exceptions.
  • Lead safe installation execution in compliance with HSE requirements, permits, lift plans, energy-isolation procedures, LOTO requirements, electrical-safety rules, and site-specific controls.
  • Coordinate staffing, mobilization, travel, tooling, cranes, specialty vendors, and shift coverage required to meet installation milestones.
  • Maintain installation schedules, look-aheads, progress reporting, action registers, issue logs, punch status, daily reports, and risk-recovery plans.

Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s degree in Mechanical Engineering, Electrical Engineering, Engineering Technology, Construction Management, or a related technical field preferred; equivalent relevant field experience may be considered.
  • Minimum 10 years of progressive experience in power generation, rotating equipment, industrial construction, EPC execution, equipment installation, field service, or comparable project-site environments.
  • At least 3 years in an installation manager, construction manager, field execution manager, site manager, or comparable leadership role.
  • Demonstrated experience installing packaged reciprocating-engine generator systems or comparable industrial equipment.
  • Experience coordinating equipment receipt, preservation, lifting, setting, alignment, interconnection, mechanical completion, punch closure, and turnover.
  • Experience leading technicians, contractors, OEM representatives, specialty vendors, and inspection resources in active project-site environments.
  • Ability to interpret P&IDs, general arrangements, foundation drawings, equipment layouts, isometrics, single-line diagrams, wiring diagrams, installation drawings, OEM manuals, and project specifications.
  • Working knowledge of generator packages, engines, alternators, enclosures, cooling systems, exhaust and emissions systems, fuel-gas systems, piping, structural supports, switchgear, transformers, grounding, controls, instrumentation, and package auxiliaries.
  • Knowledge of rigging and lifting coordination, receiving inspection, preservation, alignment, bolting, grouting, piping cleanliness, mechanical completion, systemization, punch management, turnover, LOTO, and warranty documentation.
  • Proficiency with Microsoft Office and electronic project, scheduling, document, completion, or quality management systems.
  • OSHA 30, NCCER, rigging or lifting qualifications, NFPA 70E training, PMP, construction-management certification, OEM technical training, or equivalent credentials are preferred as applicable to the assigned scope.
  • Valid driver’s license and ability to obtain required site-access credentials are required.
  • Strong field leadership, planning, organization, constructability, troubleshooting, decision-making, and risk-management skills.
  • Ability to lead multi-discipline teams in a matrix organization and work effectively with customers, contractors, OEMs, suppliers, Quality, Engineering, commissioning personnel, and operations teams.
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills, including preparation of installation plans, progress updates, issue summaries, turnover status, and customer-facing reports.
  • Ability to remain effective during time-sensitive installation, recovery, and turnover activities with limited supervision.

Physical Requirements

  • Work is performed in office, manufacturing, construction-site, and operating-facility environments, supporting equipment receipt through mechanical completion and turnover.
  • Domestic travel to project sites, suppliers, customer locations, and company facilities is expected, with occasional international travel as required.
  • Extended site assignments and non-standard schedules, including evenings, weekends, holidays, and shift-based coverage, may be required to support critical lifts, installation milestones, recovery work, and turnover.
  • Work requires personal protective equipment and may involve exposure to energized equipment, rotating machinery, fuel systems, elevated noise, lifting operations, weather, uneven terrain, and active construction environments.
  • The position requires the ability to safely access industrial facilities and work areas, including stairs, ladders, platforms, elevated structures, and uneven terrain, in accordance with site-specific requirements.
  • The role may involve access to confidential business information, customer-controlled data, proprietary technical documentation, contractual information, and safety-critical project records.
  • The employee must be able to perform the essential functions of the position, with or without reasonable accommodation, and comply with applicable safety, training, and access requirements.
