Controls Design Supervisor
Summary
The Controls Design Supervisor is placed in this role to coordinate, implement, and supervise all activities of Design Group within the I&E Controls Department. This person is responsible to overall project design execution including detailed design and schedule adherence, as well as satisfying mentoring needs and collaboration for the design group.
Principle Responsibilities and Duties
- Direct oversight of project Controls Designers and design support.
- Work with Team Leads to plan and directs all aspects of the designer activities, responsible for assigning of workload and maintaining proper staffing levels within design group.
- Set goals and objectives for the design group. Ensure areas of responsibility meet goals and objectives by providing systems, resources and training as needed.
- Identify and address gaps in design standards and best design practices.
- Lead and support recruitment and staffing requirements of group.
- Accountable for accuracy, completeness, and timeliness of group deliverables.
- Chair weekly meetings with the Project Design staff. The main objectives of these meetings are to discuss resource loadings, technical updates, standards updates, project issues, etc.
- Attend or assign a Controls Designer to attend IKO meetings, as well as schedule and hold DKO.
- Guide and work directly with Team Leads in daily tasks by giving insight and direction to solve problems.
- Lead internal planning activities and decisions.
- Support Sales for specifications reviews, define scope and control system cost.
- Ensure proper understanding of work-scope and customer needs for all projects.
- Resolve issues that prevent meeting production schedules.
- Track scheduled deliverable dates to ensure timeliness and to provide help, if needed, in obtaining information to meet deadlines.
- Ensure good design practices, applicable safety and environmental policies and procedures are followed.
- Discretely monitor the daily work/activities of each designer and ensure they are challenged, have the information they need for success, make productive use of their time as well as the time of others.
- Discuss and solve errors/problems with close attention to repeated occurrences.
- Assess and give direction for information requests from internal and external customers.
- Responsible for annual performance management process for your group.
- Establish effective communication between Controls Engineering / Electrical Engineering and Controls Design.
- When needed, work directly with engineering managers, purchasing, fabrication shop and outside fabricators when issues arise to keep projects moving forward.
- Address problems with project deliveries (as needed) with internal and external customers.
- Initiate new creative ideas, methods or “looks” for our designs to make them more cost effective, easier to build and to better meet the needs of the customer.
- Implementation and supervising of design guidelines, as well as making sure these guidelines are understood and incorporated into projects.
- Obtaining feedback from our internal and external customers. Implementing this feedback back into our designs for improvements.
- Recommend training as you see fit for the design group.
- Work with Engineering Manager and Engineering Leads to address department needs and concerns.
- Perform other duties as assigned.

Qualifications
Position requires a Bachelor’s degree in Electronics, Electrical, or Instrumentation Engineering. The employer will accept either a three-year or four-year Bachelor’s degree. This position requires 48 months of experience in Electronics, Electrical, or Instrumentation Engineering or related occupations. Must have 4 years’ experience in I&E design and Control Systems. Must have 4 years’ experience with various electrical components including MCCs, VFD’s, electrical switchgear and motors. Must have 4 years of experience on IEC, ATEX, NEC and CSA codes for Hazardous locations. Must have 4 years of experience on Control System designs using Allen Bradley PLC systems. Must have 4 years of experience on development of Cable Schedules, Loop Drawings, and Interconnection Diagrams. Must have 4 years of experience on international projects. Must have 4 years of experience on developing Hazardous Areas Dossiers for IECEx. Must have 4 years of experience on Project management. Up to 10% domestic or international travel may be required. Job location: Houston, TX.
