Senior Project Controls Project Lead
Summary
Enerflex is seeking a highly experienced and motivated Senior Project Controls Project Lead to join our dynamic Major Projects group in Calgary. This pivotal role is responsible for leading all project controls functions for our large-scale projects, ensuring they are delivered on time and within budget and are compliant with contract and sold scope.
Reporting to the Manger of Project Management, the successful candidate will be a hands-on leader, providing expertise and guidance in the areas of cost management, scheduling, progress measurement, change management, forecasting, and reporting. You will work in close collaboration with project management, engineering, procurement, and fabrication teams to drive project predictability and performance as part of our fabrication of large projects at our Calgary facility.
Our ideal candidate would have strong organizing and computer skills and can prioritize and multi-task. They are an energetic team player with the ability to work with minimal supervision and has strong initiative and self-motivation.
Duties and Responsibilities
- Project Controls Leadership: Develop, implement, and manage a robust project controls execution plan for major projects, ensuring alignment with Enerflex’s standards and client requirements
- Cost Management: Oversee all project cost control activities, including budgeting, cost forecasting (ETC/EAC), variance analysis, cash flow management, and contingency drawdown.
- Scheduling and Planning: Working with our scheduling team lead the development and maintenance of the integrated, resource-loaded master project schedule (Level I-IV) using Primavera P6, ensuring it reflects the project execution strategy
- Progress and Performance: Implement and manage the overall project progress measurement system, utilizing earned value management (EVM) principles. Analyze performance indicators (CPI, SPI) to identify trends and provide corrective action recommendations
- Change Management: Administer the project’s management of change process, ensuring that all changes in scope, schedule, and cost are properly documented, assessed, and approved.
- Reporting: Develop and deliver accurate and timely project reports for internal and external stakeholders, including monthly progress reports, cost forecasts, dashboards, and executive summaries
- Team Leadership & Mentorship: Provide guidance, leadership, and training to project controls team members, fostering a culture of excellence and continuous improvement.
- Systems & Tools: Ensure the effective utilization of project controls software, including SAP, Primavera P6, and advanced MS Excel functions. Drive continuous improvement in project controls processes and systems
- Major Projects: Dedicated primarily to one large project, while assisting other projects where available
- Stakeholder Interface for Project Controls: Liaison with clients, subtrades, suppliers and Internal departments to coordinate the cost of change orders both internally and externally. Facilitate communication with customers, vendors, intercompany departments, and manufacturing facility through customer meetings, site visits, conference calls, etc.
- Team Collaboration: Assist with and coordinate technical, commercial, and fabrication requirements on assigned projects / proposals, from initiation to closeout, in accordance with internal processes. Assist the Project Managers to initiate, plan, oversee, and / or maintain all required deliverables relating to project schedule, controls, in addition to material take-offs and preparation of Requests for Quote/Change. Assist Project Managers with client billings, approvals and expedite change order approvals
- Record keeping and accountability: Manage assigned task accountability for the project teams which include maintenance expediting of action logs, including RFI coordination.
Qualifications
- Education: Bachelor’s degree in Engineering, Construction Management, Business, or a related field
- Experience: A minimum of 10 years of progressive project controls experience on large-scale EPC projects within the oil and gas, petrochemical, or power generation industries
- Leadership Experience: Proven experience in a lead or supervisory role is an asset, with a demonstrated ability to manage a team of project controls professionals
- Industry Context: Deep understanding of the project lifecycle in an EPC and modular fabrication environment is essential
Skills and Competencies
- Expert Proficiency: Advanced knowledge of project controls principles and methodologies (WBS, EVM, critical path analysis, etc.)
- Software Proficiency:
- Expert-level user of Primavera P6
- Proficiency with SAP, particularly in the Project Systems (PS) and Controlling (CO) modules is an asset
- Advanced proficiency in Microsoft Excel (including pivot tables, VLOOKUP, and complex formulas)
- Analytical and Strategic Thinking: Strong analytical skills with the ability to interpret complex data and provide strategic recommendations to senior management
- Communication: Excellent written and verbal communication skills, with the ability to present complex information clearly and concisely to a variety of audiences
- Interpersonal Skills: A collaborative team player with the ability to build effective relationships and influence stakeholders at all levels
- Problem-Solving: Proactive and resourceful, with a proven ability to identify issues, analyze root causes, and implement effective solutions in a high-pressure environment
- Time Management: Demonstrated ability to work in a busy environment, maintaining a positive and flexible attitude for shifting priorities
