Pipe Stress Engineering Intern

Summary

Reporting to the Mechanical Engineering Supervisor, the Pipe Stress Engineering Intern will assist in performing piping flexibility and stress analysis to support mechanical and piping design activities. This role provides hands‑on experience with engineering software, industry codes, and real‑world project execution. The intern will work in a collaborative, fast‑paced environment and contribute to the safe and reliable design of piping systems.

 

This is a 16-month internship with a target start in May 2026.

 

With a foundation of integrity, the intern will bring commitment, creativity, and a willingness to learn, while supporting engineering tasks across various projects. This position is based out of the Enerflex South East Calgary office at 4700 47th St SE, Calgary.

Principle Responsibilities and Duties

Under the guidance and supervision of experienced engineers, the intern can expect to:

  • Assist in performing basic pipe stress analysis using CAESAR II or similar tools.
  • Support evaluations of piping systems for thermal expansion, pressure, and weight‑related load cases.
  • Help check equipment nozzle loads for pumps, vessels, heat exchangers, and rotating equipment.
  • Review piping isometrics, P&IDs, and 3D model screenshots to identify stress‑critical areas.
  • Support the development of engineering calculations, stress summary sheets, and technical reports.
  • Assist with identifying and documenting pipe support requirements.
  • Work closely with piping designers to incorporate routing or flexibility improvements.
  • Communicate findings to mechanical engineers, designers, and other project team members.
  • Participate in model reviews and engineering meetings as required.
  • Assist in responding to construction and fabrication queries related to pipe routing or supports.
  • Participate in shop visits to observe piping layouts, supports, or shop issues.
  • Support the resolution of minor deviations or design challenges under supervision.

Qualifications

  • 3rd year of Mechanical Engineering complete
  • Strong interest in piping design, mechanical systems, or finite element analysis.
  • Basic understanding of engineering principles such as stress, thermal expansion, and load paths.
  • Familiarity with ASME B31.3 is an asset (coursework or intro-level knowledge acceptable).
  • Proficient with Microsoft Office (Excel, Word, PowerPoint).
  • Strong analytical, communication, and organization skills.
  • Ability to work collaboratively and ask questions when needed.

Assets (Not Required)

  • Exposure to CAESAR II or other engineering software through coursework or student projects.
  • Experience reading P&IDs or engineering drawings.
  • Understanding of piping components, valves, or equipment.
