Process Engineer - Fired Equipment SME

Summary

We are seeking a highly skilled and experienced Process Engineer VI to serve as the Subject Matter Expert (SME) for fired equipment within our operations in the gas processing or related oil and gas industry. This senior-level role is responsible for the design, specification, troubleshooting, and optimization of fired heaters, reboilers, flares, and thermal oxidizers, ensuring high reliability, safety, and regulatory compliance across our facilities. 

Principle Responsibilities and Duties

  • Function as the technical authority on fired equipment including direct-fired heaters, reboilers, and incineration systems.
  • Lead the design, sizing, specification, selection, and vendor document review of fired equipment for new projects, expansions, and facility modifications.
  • Provide advanced troubleshooting support for performance, reliability, combustion, and emissions-related issues.
  • Lead or participate in root cause failure analysis and reliability improvement efforts.
  • Develop and maintain company engineering standards, specifications, calculation tools, and best practices for fired equipment.
  • Collaborate with Operations, Process Design, Mechanical Integrity, Maintenance, and Environmental teams to ensure fired systems meet operational and regulatory requirements.
  • Support air emissions compliance, including burner performance evaluations, emissions calculations, and permitting (NOx, CO, etc.).
  • Participate in HAZOPs, PHAs, and other risk reviews involving fired systems.
  • Mentor and guide junior and mid-level engineers in the principles of fired equipment design and operation.
  • Evaluate new technologies or modifications to improve energy efficiency, safety, and environmental performance.
  • Perform equipment rating and thermal design calculations using engineering software such as HYSYS, ProMax, Aspen EDR, or equivalent.
  • Conduct field assessments and site visits to support commissioning, performance evaluations, or equipment audits.
  • Conduct vendor site visits for quality reviews and FAT tests. 
  • Other process engineering activities as assigned to support the Engineering Services Department.

Qualifications

Education & Experience:

  • Bachelor’s degree in Chemical Engineering (Master’s preferred).
  • 12–15 years of engineering experience in the gas processing or related oil and gas industry.
  • At least 7 years of focused experience with fired equipment engineering, operations, or technical support.
  • PE license preferred; familiarity with industry standards (API, ASME, NFPA, etc.) required.

Skills & Competencies:

  • Expertise in combustion fundamentals, heat transfer, burner design, and emissions controls.
  • Strong skills in thermal design and process simulation tools.
  • Deep understanding of regulatory frameworks related to fired equipment (environmental, safety, and mechanical).
  • Excellent communication skills, including the ability to convey complex technical information to diverse audiences.
  • Strong leadership and mentoring capabilities; comfortable working in cross-functional teams.
  • Willingness to travel to field locations (20%).

Fast-paced general office environment. Many tasks have high degrees of time sensitivity. Domestic and international travel is possible on occasion.
